“Hibiscus” abstract art print by Cortney North – now available in my Etsy Shop!
What I love about it: The depth! There is a sense of space and atmosphere – as though you could walk right into the painting. I strive for that with every piece, but ‘Hibiscus’ in particular achieved a deeper sense of perspective through the layers of color. One of my favorite details is on the left side of the painting – it looks as though a faint sunbeam is shining down.
What was challenging about it: Working with red, which is one of my least preferred colors. Sometimes I have paintings that don’t come together. Most of these ‘need to repaint’ moments happen when I am working with a red hue. I don’t let it stop me from working with the color, but it is frustrating!
What surprised me: It took me two full days to do the prep work for this painting. I enjoy being intuitive and non-planned, but when I paint without a plan, it typically ends in disaster. (A lesson I’ve learned in all areas of life!) I spent my prep days adjusting and finalizing my color scheme and composition. I went through six sketches and color studies before I landed on a composition I liked. Once the prep work was complete, I knew I was ready to paint.
What I learned: I spent more time in the planning phase as compared to the painting phase and I’m much happier with the result. I will carry this knowledge over to my next painting!
